For Port Allegany hurdler Nick Conway, last Thursday’s meet against visiting Oswayo Valley was one – no, make that two – for the record books.
The super sophomore hit the daily double as the Gators rolled over the Green Wave by a 103-47 score, crossing the line in the 110-meter event in :15.3 to erase George Washington’s 1989 mark of :15.5, then breaking the 41-second-barrier (:40.5) in the 300 for the first time in PAHS history to obliterate Steven Tarbox’s early-’90s best by a full seven-tenths of a second.
Add those to the high-jump record he claimed in the Northern Potter meet earlier this season, and Conway now accounts for one-sixth of the school’s all-time standards.
What makes him so good? For Port coach George Riley, the answer is simple:
“He works. Maybe some of it’s genetic, too” – Conway’s father won the 1985 Delaware Division II 110-meter state championship – “but he works. He doesn’t hide at practice; he doesn’t whine and complain when you say, ‘Hey, you have to go do this.’ He does everything he’s asked – and then he does more. He’ll go and high-jump until he can’t jump any more …
“He’s just a good athlete who’s worked really hard at what he’s done. And he’s only going to get better, which is nice.”
Conway added wins in the pole vault and high jump, leading sweeps in all four events as the Gator boys moved to 5-0 for the season. Camrin Stuckey also quadrupled (javelin, long jump, discus, 1600 relay), qualifying for districts with his winning javelin throw of 163-8. Ben Osani doubled in the 200 and triple jump, and Tyce Miller’s second-place high jump of 5-8 earned the sophomore a trip to the D-9 meet. Barrett Kemp (1600, 3200, 3200 relay) tripled and Trevor Howard (800, 3200 relay) doubled for OV.
Kelsey Payne tripled (100 hurdles, triple jump, 400 relay), and Bryanna Evens (100, 200) and Renee Edgell (shot put, discus) both doubled to pace the Gator girls’ 88-62 win, improving their record to 4-1. Brianna Harvey (1600, 3200, 3200 relay) and Katie Slater (400, 800, 3200 relay) tripled for OV, while Brittany Meacham doubled in the long jump and high jump.
At the midway point, it’s shaping up to be another successful season for Riley’s teams.
“I think we’re doing well,” he said. “Like everybody else, I think the weather set everybody back. We’re sitting at 5-0 with the boys, with Coudersport and Otto-Eldred coming up. That wraps up our season; we just have the league meet and the invitationals.
“The girls – like you said in the article last week, they need a little bit of help (to catch league-leading Northern Potter). We’ll see how we do against Coudersport, and hopefully get a couple of kids who are dinged up back so we can put a full team on the track.”
With a significant number of Gator athletes taking part in the band trip to Disney, Port has pulled out of this week’s Oswayo Valley Invitational.
“Hopefully the Florida sunshine does some good things for people, because it’s going to rain up here all week again,” Riley said with a laugh. “But everybody’s in the same boat. We can’t say it’s just us. We got some in – in less-than-great conditions, but they’re in. The kids have had experiences, and now we can see what we can do.”
