Port Allegany and St. Marys shared the Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League’s North Division crown in 2011. This time around, the Gators want the title to themselves. And after Tuesday afternoon’s 3-1 win at Ridgway to move to a perfect 6-0 in the division (9-2 overall), they’re well on the way to earning it.
Reigning UAVSL North Most Valuable Player Scotty Brookens continued his campaign to put the Port High records out of reach, scoring his fourth consecutive hat trick and sixth this season to pace the Gators to the sweep over the Elkers. Brookens now has 24 goals – two shy of the single-season record he set last year – and 60 for his career. Eli Knapp assisted on all three scores, while Ben Edgell posted nine saves to chalk up another win in the net.
The senior keeper found a different part of the scoresheet in last Thursday’s 7-0 victory over visiting Kane, moving up front after halftime to notch his first goal of the season. Brookens tallied three times, Tyler Kittilson twice, and fullback Aaron Majot also scored as the Gators cruised to the win.
“I wanted to give Ben some time in the field. He’s worked hard for us,” Port coach Aaron Clark said. “I told Sam (Kysor), Scott, and TK that we had a direct goal: I wanted to get Aaron Majot and Ben Edgell a goal today. They’re defensive seniors, and I wanted them to have the chance to score.”
Kysor picked up four assists against the Wolves, with Kittilson (2), Brookens, Knapp, Adam Koehler, and Dane Kio also adding helpers, and Edgell and Garrett Talkington combined for two saves in a quiet day in the net.
“Statistics or not, he’s in everything,” Clark said of Kysor, the Gator playmaker. “Whether his name shows up with goals or assists, he was vital to the first half.”
Port is home for the next week, with Galeton visiting on Friday afternoon before UAVSL North matches against Smethport (Oct. 2), which will be Senior Day, and St. Marys (Oct. 4).
